Ed
Hurley, born March 17, 1937 in a farmhouse in Fairfield, Indiana was
the son of Herbert and Ruth Hurley. He grew up on a farm with three
brothers near Oxford, Ohio. Ed attended Miami University and graduated
with a Bachelors Degree of Architecture in Fine Arts and a Masters Degree
of Urban Design in Fine Arts.
Ed and his wife Jan Hurley were married
in 1959. They had two daughters – Jill, now an art teacher and artist
in Columbus, Ohio, and Pam, a child social work consultant in Portland,
Oregon. Jan lost her life to breast cancer after a long battle with
this dreaded disease in 1998. Ed has also lost his father, a brother,
and numerous friends and other relatives to cancer. In their memory,
Ed has been active in raising funds for cancer treatment, research and
education.
Ed has long had an interest in art,
architecture and painting in watercolor. He first took watercolor classes
at Miami University in the late 1950s. He was busy the next 35 years
pursuing his profession as a city planner in private practice. His passion
for watercolor was put aside for this time, but never forgotten.
Nearing retirement and at the encouragement
of his second wife Sally, Ed took a watercolor class in the fall of
2002. It immediately rekindled the passion he had for this art in his
college days; he has been studying and painting in watercolor ever since.
His primary inspiration comes from landscapes and scenes from places
to which he and Sally have traveled. Sally is his best critic and supporter.
